The other day in a Game Development Twitch stream, one of the streamer's friends in chat mentioned something about looking for someone to draw some character and background art for their roleplaying game, something between a classic RPG found in an NES/SNES-era game and the chibi-like style found in RPG Maker games. I casually mentioned, "Why not look around deviantArt? There's many young artists looking for a challenge or for a commission or a more permanent job."

His response was that he had tried looking around dA, but hadn't found anyone. Not sure if he meant specifically looking on a 'looking for work' board or just randomly went to some artists' pages. So. That got me started thinking: how easy is it really for an artist to find work? Would an artist ever really turn down work? What makes the sun shine, mommy?

... Okay, that last question is just a joke. But seriously. I see it rather regularly, of artists I've followed posting their commission rates for work. I was not certain that the person who said that, above, really put into consideration truly finding an artist for his project might entail following through with more that just a simple but brief search. How many artists here on dA would love to work on a game project, making game art and character graphics? How many of those have posted somewhere, anywhere that they are looking for work? And of those, how many have ever turned down work for any valid reason? On the flip side of the coin, how many artists also follow game development streams on Twitch or other video-on-demand sites, in the prospect of finding work?

I don't know. All I know is, a few comments later I was getting the impression this developer was getting jaded about finding an artist. And, that's not really beneficial to either side of the issue --- is it?
